MEP talks turbines in Finzean

Anti wind farm campaigners welcomed the arrival of a senior Conservative politician, and vocal critic of wind farms, today (Thursday) to a talk in Deeside.
Struan Stevenson MEP, has written a book on the controversial energy initiative, ‘So Much Wind-The Myth of Green Energy’ and will put across his points at the meeting in Finzean Community Hall tonight at 7pm.
The event has been organised by the No To Tibeberchindy Wind Farm group, which has spearheaded a protest against plans for a six turbine windfarm on Coliochbhar Hill, near Alford.
The proposed development for the towering turbines, standing at 377ft has garnered 366 letters of objection from within the community.
Vicky Dawson a leading member of the protest movement said: “It is a truly spectacular location, from the summit you can see landmarks up to 70 kilometres away.”
Bennachie, The Cairngorms national park and Ben of Cullen are all visible from the proposed site.
The protestors have claimed aesthetics are not the only thing at risk as wildlife may suffer.
Mr Stevenson’s visit has been praised for raising the profile of the issue.
Ms Dawson said: “No individual person could take on a company like Inifis (the wind farm development company)…Struan Stevenson’s support is much appreciated.”
Mr Stevenson has been a member of European parliament since 1999, holding a range of diverse positions from being senior vice president of the parliament’s fisheries committee to president of EU climate change, biodiversity and sustainable development intergroup.
The MEP sparked controversy last month when he compared rising numbers of wind farm developments across Scotland to the threat posed by Hitler, urging turbine protestors to “recapture the same spirit that defeated Nazi Germany and turned the tide of history.”
Entry to the event at the Community Hall is £5.
