More turbines to turn near Tumbler?

A second and potentially doubly large wind turbine project, which will be located 20 kilometres north of Tumbler Ridge will soon be holding an open house here in town. The open house will take place on June 4 from four to eight p.m. at the Trend Mountain Hotel and Conference Centre.

The project, called the Sundance Wind project is being developed by Sundance Wind Project Limited Partnership, a subsidiary of EDF EN Canada Inc. The initial forecasted megawatts to be generated from this facility was about 50 MW, however the turbines are now estimating to produce about 250 MW.

The project is undergoing its environmental assessment mostly evaluating the potential adverse impacts on the local environment, communities and Treaty rights. The proposed Project area is located within the British Columbia Treaty 8 area. On November 19, 2012, Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) provided signatory British Columbia Treaty 8 First Nations with its understanding of Treaty 8, its initial review of the potential impacts from the proposed Project on Treaty 8 rights, and its proposed consultation approach to the West Moberly First Nations, Saulteau First Nations, Halfway River First Nation, Fort Nelson First Nation, Prophet River First Nation, Doig River First Nation, Blueberry River First Nations and the McLeod Lake Indian Band. Based on the initial review described above, the proposed Project area lies in (or is in the vicinity of) the traditional use territories of the West Moberly First Nations, Saulteau First Nations and McLeod Lake Indian Band. EAO has invited the West Moberly First Nations, Saulteau First Nations and McLeod Lake Indian Band to participate in the Working Group. Based on the initial review EAO will inform the Fort Nelson First Nation, Prophet River First Nation, Doig River First Nation, Blueberry River First Nations and the Halfway River First Nation of key milestones reached in the environmental assessment for the proposed Project.
