Wind turbine plan refused

The Planning Service has turned down a proposal to build a wind turbine at a local farm.

An application had been submitted to build a wind turbine, with a hub height of 40m, at the Magheralane Road in Randalstown.

The application was for the turbine to supplement the farm business, with the excess sold to the electricity grid.

However, when the application came before Antrim Council’s Planning Committee last week, the Planning Service had turned down the proposal.

Planners sited that the wind turbine was within sight of the radars at Belfast International Airport and due to other turbines in the area, could cause issues with the radar and “cause a major safety issue”.

The plan was also refused on the grounds that it had not been demonstrated that the turbine would not give rise to unacceptable electromagnetic interference to a radio link licenced to Northern Ireland Electricity.

Local councillor Bobby Loughran said he was in support of the application, and added that the applicant was for launching a planning appeal.

He added: “I would support him in that.”
