County council hears proposal by two wind energy developers

Randolph County Council Tuesday considered requests from two wind energy development companies interested in building wind farms in the area by the end of next year.

EDP Renewals of Houston, Texas, formerly Horizon Wind Energy, has been planning the Headwaters Wind Farm Project since 2008. The Headwaters Project will generate an estimated 100-200 megawatts of electricity with 50 to 100 wind turbines situated on 50,000 acres of land leased in Randolph County.

EDP Project Manager Jeffrey Nemeth said the company owns and operates 30 wind farms in the US and employs approximately 300 people. EDP develops, owns and operates wind farms and is directly responsible for the development of more than 3,900 megawatts of wind energy, the third largest capacity by a developer in the US.
