County Council votes to restrict wind farms

PLYMOUTH – While it may not have been the complete ban that some were hoping for, on Monday the Marshall County Commissioners ruled on a revised ordinance regarding wind farms that had been tabled at a previous meeting.

On March 18 the Commissioners tabled a revised ordinance sent to them by the Marshall County Plan Commission that included greater set backs and other restrictions requested by a local citizens group regarding commercial wind farm operations in the county. When taken in total the restrictions make it highly unlikely that a commercial wind energy conversion system could set up operation in Marshall County.

After tabling the ordinance, the Commissioners – through their representative on the Plan Commission, Commissioner Deb Griewank – made a request to the Plan Commission to consider the banning of wind energy systems altogether. The request made for a lively discussion during the Plan Commission meeting at the end of April with the commission setting a public hearing May 23 on an ordinance regarding the ban.
