Group to fight Cumbrian turbines scheme

Villagers at Rosley, near Wigton, are forming an action group to fight proposals for wind turbines more than twice the height of Carlisle Civic Centre.
West Coast Energy wants to erect three turbines, up to 377ft to the blade tip, at Carwath Farm.
About 100 people turned out for a meeting of Rosley parish council on Monday to urge councillors to lobby against the scheme.
The parish council will tell Allerdale, which decides the planning application, that it opposes the turbines. The concerned residents include Ruth Eyley, who lives with her husband Dave and their two children less than a mile from the site.
She said: “My primary concern is the cumulative effect on the landscape and the environment.
“We have birds or prey that might be injured by the blades. And it’s going to have a massive impact on the landscape. They will be visible from 35 kilometres away. We moved here because it’s a beautiful part of the country.”
She added: “We are not against wind turbines. We just want them in the right area.”
The new group called Act – Against Carwath Turbines – is setting up a website and asking sympathisers to sign an online petition at http://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/save-cumbria-from-windturbines.
It is also urging people to object to West Coast’s planning application by the deadline of May 13.
Anyone wishing to comment can go to Allerdale Council’s website – www.allerdale.gov.uk – select ‘search for planning applications’ then type in the reference number 2/2013/0227.
West Coast Energy says the turbines would generate enough electricity to power 3,960 homes.
It has promised to donate 10 per cent of the profits from the windfarm to a fund to benefit the local community.
