Cape Wind has pulled the old bait and switch

From your March 11 article “Cape steel deal dead in the water,” it is apparent that Cape Wind has pulled a proverbial bait and switch.

The bait: In 2010, Cape Wind announced that the project’s monopole foundations would be built by the local manufacturer Mass Tank, creating up to 300 jobs in Massachusetts. The agreement was hailed as a boon for the local economy and garnered a great deal of public and political support for the project.

The switch: In March 2013, Cape Wind abandoned Mass Tank, despite the manufacturer’s contention that it spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to learn how to do it right. To add insult to injury, Cape Wind now plans to ship the monopole manufacturing jobs overseas.

This should come as no surprise, since it has already been determined that the German manufacturer Siemens – not General Electric – is slated to build Cape Wind’s turbines. It would seem that Cape Wind’s idea of our clean energy future is sending jobs to Europe, while collecting U.S. taxpayer subsidies and raising our rates!
