The California Native American Heritage Commission recently threw its support behind two area American Indian tribes, who say the 112-turbine Ocotillo Wind Project in Imperial County was built on a sacred American Indian site.

The Viejas and Quechan tribes are actually the proper entities to make such a determination, said a member of the commission staff, adding that the commission declared its support for the tribes.

The commission, which met in San Diego, also requested that the state attorney general research the authority the commission has over a project on federal land.

Pattern Energy Group LP, based in San Francisco with an office in San Diego, is the business behind the Ocotillo Wind project. An effort to reach a Pattern spokesman on short notice April 23 was unsuccessful.

San Diego Gas & Electric Co. has a power purchase agreement with Pattern.
