EPA tests noise near Waterloo wind farm

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is using noise testing near a Clare Valley wind farm to determine whether local residents’ claims about health impacts are valid.

Continuous noise frequency and level testing is being done at six sites near the Waterloo wind farm over the next two months.

This follows testing done by the EPA earlier in the year at several urban and regional locations around South Australia.

Peter Dolan from the EPA says 57 residents will also be keeping ‘noise diaries’ to document their own experiences.

“What that’ll enable us to do is compare periods of time where they believe there’s an issue with our actual noise data, to see whether the two match up and whether indeed noise frequencies are actually related to what they’re feeling,” he said.

“If we were to find particular frequencies or particular wind conditions which there seemed to be a more pronounced effect and if our colleagues in Health were of the view that that effect was significant to people, we would investigate changing our guidance for new developments in particular.”
