The Local Government Association (LGA) will lobby the State Government to ban wind turbines from suburban backyards.
The move comes after Burnside Council unsuccessfully lobbied the government to close a planning loophole that allowed wind turbines up to 10m tall to be erected without development approval.
Burnside Council raised the issue at last week’s LGA general meeting, winning the backing of other councils.
Burnside Mayor David Parkin told the Eastern Courier Messenger he was pleased other councils had supported the push.
“We believe there’s a potential development problem here and feel it would be better addressed up front,” he said.
“We need a process that regulates them … like any other development.”
Mr Parkin said Burnside called on its fellow councils and the LGA to support its bid after a “disappointing” response from the government.
“They brushed the issue aside and we believe it’s important,” he said.
The wind turbine issue came to a head when a Wattle Park resident applied to the council in September last year to put a 6m wind turbine on his property.
Burnside Council’s bid to close the loophole has been rejected twice by the Planning Department.
