Energy firm RWE npower renewables has been given permission to “re-power” its first UK onshore wind farm.

The Taff Ely wind farm in Rhondda Cynon Taf has 20 turbines and was built in 1993.

The new planning permission will result in seven 110-metre turbines at the site rather than the current 20.

RWE said the new, more effective turbines will double the wind farm’s energy generation to an average annual production equivalent to 9,700 UK homes.
