A protest walk against wind turbines has been organised in the picturesque Gortin Glens this Sunday afternoon.

Professional mountaineer and Sperrins expert, Martin McGuigan from Omagh, has organised the walk to highlight the beauty of the area which he says will be “destroyed” if planning is granted for 14 wind turbines.

The outdoor enthusiast was one of those who helped create the ‘Robbers Table’ walk in conjunction with Omagh District Council a few years ago.

This is a walk across the small mountain with views of the entire district, views which Mr McGuigan says is becoming “saturated” with wind turbines being erected on the horizon in all directions.

Mr McGuigan is being joined in his efforts by the Lisnaharney Area Residents Group who have recently expressed their objection to the nearby wind farm plans.

Encouraging as many members of the public to join him this Sunday, April 21, Mr McGuigan said, “Our local environment and hills need your help.”

He is asking everyone to meet at Eskradooey crossroads for 1pm sharp.

There will be stewards giving directions from the main Gortin Road at the bottom of the Glens, with car-parking available.

Mr McGuigan will give a brief talk on the walk and why it is so important to preserve the area before leading the group towards the Robbers Table in the heart of the Sperrins.
