Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak is calling for more affordable energy to help lower costs for families and businesses, but a private member’s bill to slow Ontario’s wind industry has been defeated.
“Hydro bills are too high…This is squeezing our families’ wallets and costing businesses money they could be using to hire new workers,” Hudak says.
The Progressive Conservatives were taking aim at Liberal subsidies for industrial wind farms and provincial control over where they’re built, with a bill introduced on Thursday.
Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson says the Ensuring Affordable Energy Act “would end these wasteful subsidies, while giving decision making back to municipalities over where industrial wind farms go.”
But the bill was voted down by the NDP and Liberals.
Wind turbines in the Huron-Bruce riding have been controversial, dividing communities and forcing some residents from their homes.
There are some who say there are thousands of willing hosts for turbines, but over 75 municipalities have called for a stop to wind development.
