National Trust to adopt renewable energy

The National Trust (NT) is to spend around £35m to enable some of the properties it owns to be powered by renewable energy – but wind turbines are off the agenda. The plan is that half of the NT’s properties will be powered by alternative energy sources by 2020.

In a deal with the renewable energy company Good Energy, the money will go on other low-carbon energy sources, including biomass or woodchip-fuelled boilers and hydro power turbines. The NT will get £49 a year for every customer it signs up and this will help fund five pilot projects. If they prove successful, 38 more properties will be converted.

The decision not to install wind turbines is thought to be influenced by the views of the National Trust’s chairman Sir Simon Jenkins who strongly objects to them. An NT spokesperson told the BBC that they represented “the wrong wind in the wrong place”. Jenkins himself had said that wind turbines were “very intrusive”.
