Wind turbines and acoustics

Allan Greenberg demonstrates either a lack of knowledge or a high level of disinterest in the material deficiencies in the Scituate Wind acoustical study.

The Scituate Wind acoustical study embraces an antiquated MassDEP protocol that only measures a weighted, audible sound. It also neglects to measure aerodynamic amplitude modulation, infrasound or low-frequency noise. It is those octave bands that accurately monitor or report the actual acoustical experience emanating from Scituate’s industrial wind turbine.

Notwithstanding, there has been very little effort on the part of the MassDEP to update those guidelines to embrace a more appropriate testing regimen for industrial wind turbines. The Scituate Wind/Scituate Board of Health study is clearly deficient in the areas key to accurately analyze and record the noise emanating from industrial wind turbines.

We appreciate the opportunity to educate Mr. Greenberg and others on this issue.

DAVID DARDI, Scituate
