Fears were expressed that the decision to allow the turbine could see more in and around Clare after St Edmundsbury Council’s development control committee voted through plans last Thursday (April 4) for James Sills to erect a 78-metre high turbine on Maple Hill off Chilton Street, Clare.
Cllr Dorothy Whittaker (Hundon) said: “This could set a precedent that would see many more turbines erected in this area.”
Cllr Peter Stevens (Cavendish) said: “This may be the precursor for others to go ahead if we approve this.”
Planning officer Gemma Pannell assured them: “Allowing one does not open the door as you could say having more will have greater impact on the landscape.”
Iona Parker from STOC said after the decision: “We’re very disappointed as we worked very hard over the last year to put forward sound arguments as to why it should be refused. “We’re a bit surprised it’s been approved despite so much opposition to it locally and all the ward members arguing against it.
“It doesn’t bode well for future applications and setting a precedent is a huge worry as ones on the scale of the one at Brinkley (Wadlow) could now be brought forward.”
