Public to get their say on Angus Glens windfarm

The public will be able to have their say on proposals for an 18-turbine windfarm in the Angus Glens this month.

People are invited to provide their views on the proposed Macritch Hill windfarm at exhibitions taking place between April 11 and 13.

Developer Eneco Wind UK will present indicative plans for the 54 megawatt (MW) development on Scottish Water land, six miles north-west of Kirriemuir.

Eneco Wind UK and Scottish Water have announced plans for a development at Backwater Reservoir as the utility company investigates self-sufficiency and the prospect of providing one third of its annual energy requirement at Backwater.

Eneco development manager, Daniel Badcock, said: “Eneco is committed to engaging in … how the consultation process will be carried out and how inputs from participants will be used throughout the development process.”

Known as Macritch Hill, after the 1,558 ft hill to the east, the project will stand on the shoreside parcel of land at the 1,300 ft Little Ley.

At the exhibitions Eneco will ask members of the public how they wish to be consulted during the process. The firm states that it aims to create a communications pledge following initial feedback.

Eneco is also behind the Tullo Wind Farm near Laurencekirk, 17MW of which is operational, with a further 25MW under construction.

Events will be held at Kingoldrum village hall from noon to 8pm on April 11, Kilry hall at the same time on April 12 and Kirriemuir Town Hall from 10am-6pm on April 13.

Scottish Water commercial director, Chris Banks, said: “We want to become increasingly energy efficient while helping to meet Scotland’s ambitious renewable energy targets.

“That’s why we are exploring the feasibility of renewable energy development on suitable Scottish Water land.

“Macritch Hill in Angus is a site which has been identified for possible development and has the potential to generate up to a third of Scottish Water’s annual energy requirement.”
