Public debates wind turbines

Wind turbines may soon be coming to North East, but some community members say the project will hurt the township.

It was standing room only as concerned residents filled the North East Township Municipal Building for the public comment period on wind turbines.

Pioneer Green Energy out of Texas has leased land along Interstate 90 to build a wind farm, and it would feature between 10 and 20 turbines, all used to create what they say is clean energy.

Those for the turbines say they are a wonderful source of energy, clean, and will not hurt animals. They also believe the option is better than fracking.

Those against the proposed turbine project say the blades are dangerous killing wildlife, causing noise and vibrations and shadow flicker.

Tonight was just a public hearing. The planning commission will review the plan and it will go to the supervisors. The project could see completion by the end of 2013.
