Outraged at letter to state urging denial of funding

March 30, 2013 | www.capecodonline.com

Through a painful and prolonged process, Falmouth selectmen made the decision to recommend removing their wind turbines. It is now up to the citizens to make a final determination.

Part of that determination will depend upon whether or not the state will help to support the cost of dismantling the turbines. I am outraged that Falmouth’s Megan Amsler has written to the state in her capacity as chairman of our town’s energy committee to say she is “ashamed that the town has even deigned to ask the state for aid in removing the turbines because they bother 19 people within a 1/3 mile.” Not only is she mistaken in her numbers – many more than 19 are significantly affected – but her actions have the potential to undermine what could be the final steps toward resolving the town’s internal wars.

Taking no mitigating action at this point will jeopardize future environmental projects in our town. Worse, it will demonstrate that years of political debate and conflict resolution are worthless. Doing nothing about the turbines will not resolve the problem. And actively soliciting the state to withhold funds is an unacceptable step in the wrong direction.
