Scituate: Advisory committee considers municipal wind turbine shut down proposal

Neighbors that live near Scituate’s municipal wind turbine appeared before the town’s advisory committee Thursday night to drum up support for their town meeting petition article that would temporarily shut down the turbine.

Community group member Gerry Kelly presented the neighbor’s case to the committee to shut down the wind turbine, until a noise study can get underway.

“We are not sleeping. We are suffering the adverse effects of shadow flicker. One of the members of the board of health at the October meeting brought forth the issue that we suspend the operation of the industrial wind turbine during night time hours, until we can complete the study. Now obviously you can’t even start or complete a study unless it’s operating. But until we get it all wound up to do the study, we’re imploring the town to suspend the operation,” Kelly said.

Mark McKeever lives at 151 Driftway, which is about 600 feet from the turbine and said extreme shadow flicker is making his family ill.

“I just would like to have somebody just come into the home during this flicker period and not have them get a headache or not feel dizzy. It’s really, really bad. Sometimes I get emotional talking about this because it affects everyone in my family, but it is something that is just horrific!” McKeever explained.

The advisory committee has not yet voted on the issue and is taking the matter under advisement.
