DEP talks turbine proposal with Aurora residents

Aurora – Environmental regulators met with folks in Hancock County Thursday, to answer questions about a proposed 18-turbine wind farm.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection held its first public hearing on the project at the Airline Community School in Aurora.

The Company “First Wind” wants to begin construction this year on an 18-turbine farm at Schoppe Ridge in the town.

The plans include 512-foot turbines and two 344-foot meteorological towers.

Power would flow from the facility to a substation in Eastbrook.

A company representative, as well as noise and visual consultants, were on hand to talk about the project.

There wasn’t any overwhelming opposition to the plan, but some folks were curious about property value depreciation, effects on wildlife, and property tax benefits.

The DEP will take Thursday’s comments into consideration as their project review moves forward.

A second meeting will be scheduled for later this summer.
