Plymouth: Proposed Stop and Shop turbine on hold

The Stop and Shop Supermarket Company’s request for a special permit to construct a wind turbine behind their store on Samoset Street, just off of Route 3, in Plymouth has been postponed.

The Planning Board continued the hearing because the Board has not yet received an acoustical report from the DEP.

Chairman Marc Garrett says this wind turbine proposal differs from those the Board has heard before: “It’s in an area that is not a rural setting, so by that it’s a little bit different than what we’ve seen in the past, where we’ve had larger turbines proposed in rural areas —cranberry bogs, neighborhoods. This is not really a neighborhood. It’s a commercial strip. There are neighborhoods around it and we understand the sensitivity of that.”

The proposed turbine is considered a small one—at 275 feet to the top of the rotor. The Kingston turbines are just above 400 feet to that point. The Stop and Shop wind turbine proposal is scheduled to be heard by the ZBA on April 17th.
