Gob Knob wind turbine shut down

The State Journal-Register | Posted Mar 22, 2013 | www.sj-r

FARMERSVILLE – The Rural Electric Convenience Cooperative has shut down the Gob Knob wind turbine on Interstate 55 at Farmersville for repairs.

“The turbine’s main bearing started to overheat in mid-March, and will need replacement by the manufacturer,” RECC president and CEO David Stuva said in a statement.

He said the new bearing would be shipped from the equipment manufacturer in Europe. No timeline was given for restarting the turbine, which began operation in March 2009.

The turbine takes its name from coal waste – “gob” – used to build up the hill where the turbine was erected.

Farmersville is 25 miles south of Springfield.
