Kincardine sets aside wind money

Tax money realized from the Armow wind project will be used for studies on the ill effects of wind turbines.

The idea was approved by Kincardine Council on Wednesday but there were some concerns.

As we first told you, Kincardine councillor Jacqueline Faubert presented the idea as a notice of motion, calling for up to $100,000 of tax money from the project to be earmarked for studies on noise and vibration of the turbines if necessary.

Some councillors were concerned how the money was going to be managed each year and Mayor Larry Kraemer was concerned about the legalities of it.

Faubert says she sees no problem.

She says, as councillors, they are entrusted with the taxpayers money and they will ensure that the money is put to the use which will be decided by council.

Faubert says the money will not be put into a slush fund for use elsewhere but will focus on an independent health study on turbine effects

Mayor Larry Kraemer would have preferred to have the motion passed by administrative staff for input and a legal opinion obtained before any vote but that was defeated.

Kraemer fears the motion, which has been approved, could come back to bite the municipality in the rump.

Faubert says the approval of the motion is an important, progressive, productive step for council to take.

She says it lets companies know that they’re very concerned about these kinds of developments and they do have control and council is now exercising that control.

The Armow Wind Project proposes the installation of 90 wind turbines generating up to 180 megawatts of electricity by Pattern Renewable Holdings and Samsung Renewable Energy.
