Setback setback?

In an earlier letter to the editor, we expressed support for Scotian Windfield Inc.’s Martock Ridge turbine project, based on our belief there would be a two-kilometre setback from the nearest residence.
However, in a March 8 article in the business section, Environment Minister Sterling Belliveau suggests that, in fact, the project is to be placed a mere 550 metres “from anyone whose health may be affected by it.”
Our belief that there was to be a two-kilometre setback was based on information in a Jan. 19 article that “the turbines would be more than two kilometres from the nearest house,” according to an environmental assessment. We certainly would not express support for any project that was to be located in such close proximity to its neighbours.
At 550 metres, the facility may live up to the setback demands of local bylaws. It is not, however, taking into account the more recent research into the topic and the recognition in other jurisdictions that setbacks of two kilometres should be employed.
Thank you, Minister Belliveau, for pursuing this critical issue.
