Council backed over wind turbine

A planning nspector has backed a council’s decision to reject plans for a 67metre high wind turbine on green belt land at Barkisland, near Halifax.

Applicant James Clarkson appealed to the Planning Inspectorate after Calderdale Council rejected his plans for a single turbine south of Gosling Lane.

Planning inspector Robin Brooks has ruled in the council’s favour.

In a report, he said: “To my mind, although the physical footprint of the turbine would be small, it would represent significant visual encroachment into the countryside and would inevitably reduce the openness of the green belt.

“I conclude on the first main issue that the proposed turbine would ne inappropriate development in the green belt.

“I consider that it would be a prominent and intrusive man-made feature on the skyline that would draw attention to itself through the movement of its blades and which in some views would clearly exceed the scale of the existing vertical features.”

He concluded: “Very special circumstances to justify the development do not therefore exist.”
