Bowcock says he will shut turbines down if not in compliance

FAIRHAVEN – Select Board Chairman Brian K. Bowcock said he will shut the turbines down if they are not in compliance with the state’s 10 decibel limit on how much noise they can add above normal levels.

“I will shut them down. That will be immediate,” he said. “That’s not even a debatable issue.”

Mr. Bowcock said the towns can’t shut the turbines down unless they are in noncompliance with the state DEP sound regulations because of the town’s obligations under the contract it signed with the developer, Fairhaven Wind LLC.

Mr. Bowcock said the turbines are actually providing the “biggest income” of anything to the town as far as new growth and development. He said the town gets $100,000 a year in “rent” and $50,000 so far in electricity savings. He said the electricity savings could even increase over time.
