Local MPP voices outrage over taxpayer commitment to pay

Recent claims that taxpayers will have to continue paying wind companies when turbines are shut down during low demand periods is “appalling” says Rick Nicholls.

The MPP for Chatham-Kent Essex told The Chatham Daily News Monday he is attempting determine how much taxpayers will have to fork out when turbines aren’t operating.

“These are tax dollars that should be spent on much-needed front-line health care or to reinstate the $400,000 in discretionary funds taken from those in need when Ontario Works lost this service last year in the riding,” said Nicholls.

He said the government is now making way for more than 500 additional wind turbines in Chatham-Kent-Essex.

Nicholls said the government is allowing for turbine construction at an alarming rate without any community input.

“In my riding it’s too little, too late,” he said. “Turbine companies are scrambling to erect as many turbines as possible in the event communities say no to further developments,” he said.
