Board of Health takes no action on sound level meter request

KINGSTON – A sound level meter is an instrument that measures sound pressure level in decibels.

Leland Road resident Doreen Reilly has been asking the Board of Health since last October to borrow a loaner sound level meter from the state Department of Environmental Protection to measure sound levels from the Independence wind turbine.

According to the state, local officials can contact DEP to make arrangements to borrow a sound level meter and be trained on how to use it, but one has not been requested.

Board of Health Chairman Joe Casna said this week that the board has taken no vote, nor acted on any motion by any member of the board, to direct the health agent to acquire a loaner meter.

Casna said a professional sound study is being conducted by consultants Harris Miller Miller and Hanson to address the very issue for which Reilly has requested a loaner meter.

“A big piece of the puzzle will be filled in when the results of the professional sound study are available,” he said.

Comments on the draft scope for the acoustical study had to be submitted by Feb. 28. The final study scope is expected to be available for distribution by Friday, March 15.

Discussion of sound and flicker effect from the wind turbines will continue at Monday night’s Board of Health meeting. It starts at 6 p.m. at the Town House.
