Iberdrola begins dismantling wind testing towers

HAMMOND – Spanish energy company Iberdrola Renewables is in the process of dismantling its test towers in the town, on the heels of a January announhcement it would withdraw from its leases with residents to set up wind towers.

Crews dismantled the first tower Thursday.

“We’ve been in contact with the landowners were in lease agreements with to coordinate the dismantling,” company spokesman Paul N. Copleman said. “The three other towers should be taken down in the next few weeks.”

While he could not say the exact time when all the towers would be taken down, Mr. Copleman said the process typically takes one day for each tower.

The meteorological towers were part of years-long feasibility test of wind in Hammond.

The company has said its decision to end the project was over wind power regulations and the wind energy market.

“We had decided it would not be a good site for a wind farm, and won’t be pursuing it,” he said.

The company is still involved with projects throughout Northern New York, including the Horse Creek wind farm in Clayton and a potential project in Parishville, which are all in various stages of development.
