New windfarm for Hollyford

Hollyford is in line for a major new 3-turbine windfarm, following a decision by An Bord Pleanála. Ecopower Developments Ltd. have been given the green light to build three turbines with an overall height of overall height of up to 126m, with access roads, at Lackenacreena/Foilmacduff, Glenpaudeen, Hollyford.

Noreen McHugh and others, and the Heritage Council had lodged appeals against the plans on December 22, 2011. Objections included the impact of noise – combined with the nearby Glenough wind farm – the “visual impact and cumulative visual impact with nine permitted wind turbines, along with the impact on property prices. Concerns were also expressed regarding the impact on bird and bat populations, impact on private wells, and the general “health and safety impacts of windfarms.” “Hollyford is now saturated with wind turbines as there will be a cumulative effect,” added the appellants. “The impression given in the EIS (Environmental Impact Statement) is that the area around Hollyford is in decline, is untrue. Only a small number of the population are full time farmers, of which fewer are involved in wind energy. The majority of rural dwellers are working in occupations other than farming. Permission for this development will negatively impact on the desire of future generations to build in Lackenacreena, Glenough Upper, and Foilmacduff. This would impact on the village, national school, etc.”
