Twelve 130m wind turbines before councillors

A dozen of what would be the tallest wind turbines in the region are on the cards for Upper Nithsdale.

Blackhill at Euchan Water to the south west of Kirkconnel is the sprawling site Community Windpower Ltd wants to develop.

The proposals go before planning committee councouncillors today.

At 130 metres, the turbines would be more than twice the height of the Scott Monument in Edinburgh and just 28 metres shorter than Blackpool Tower. By comparison, Palmerston Park football pitch is 102 metres long.

The turbines would generate an output of 50mw and would nestle in two square miles of low agricultural ground at Drumbie.

The plans seek permission for a meteorological mast, a substation, control building and underground grid connection and extraction of rock from six borrow pits.

An original application was submitted in April, 2010, for 18 turbines and two meteorological masts.

The proposal was amended to remove five turbines predicted to interfere with Glasgow Prestwick Airport’s radar and one turbine because of its impact on the land.

Planning officers have recommended members agree the build on condition any turbine interfering with the airport’s radar would be suspended and the company will correct any interference to tv or radio reception arising from the windfarm during the first year of operation.

Other conditions include contractors being required to repair the road to the site following development.

No objections have been received.
