Last chance to comment on third turbine application

Western Telegraph | 27th February 2013 | www.westerntelegraph.co.uk

A third application has been submitted for a wind turbine at Panteg near Fishguard, showing a “total disregard for the planning process” according to objectors.

The second turbine would be located just over the A487 from an existing turbine, and would be exactly the same height; just under 35 metres from base to blade tip.

The agent has already submitted two previous applications for a turbine at almost the exactly the same spot at Clegyrn, Castle Morris.

The first was withdrawn, only for another application for a slightly smaller turbine to be submitted a day later.

This was refused by planners on November 27th, who voted eight to two against it, citing fears of an adverse impact on the visual amenity of the area.

The third application (12/0911/PA) was validated by the council on January 25th.

The public have until today (Wednesday) to submit comments.

The 50kw turbine, which has a base to hub height of 24.9 metres and blades of nine metres would generate 180MWh of energy per year, powering 43 homes and representing an annual CO2 reduction of 94.14 tonnes.

Objectors say it will be seen in the far distance from Dinas head, Treffgarn mountain, Garn fawr, Plumstone mountain and in the middle distance from Stop and Call and Mathry.

The turbine would be owned by three local families, all living in near proximity to it and would provide more than 50% of the energy for a nearby dairy farm.

The applicants also say they would make the turbine available for educational visits.

The last application for a turbine at the Panteg site drew 157 letters of objection.

“[This third application] suggests that the developers are driven by the cash incentives available to them, including a substantial annual income rather than seeking to preserve the unique historical landscape of the area for future generations,” said the Stop Turbines at Pen y Banc group (STOP).
