Migraines, interrupted sleep, head pressure and earaches. It’s not the quality of life Ruth Corrigan envisioned when she packed up her bags 26 years ago to relocate to rural serenity on the hills above Lake George.
The environmentalist’s 24ha block an hour outside Canberra is hemmed in by wind turbines that clutter the landscape and give her eardrums a workout.
The nearest wind turbine is less than 2km from her bedroom.
“It can be quite loud, like a constant traffic sound when the wind direction is right. Over time it gets to you. Sometimes it’s days and weeks of constant noise that you just wish went away.”
This is the reality that will soon be thrust upon farmers in the state’s central west where four wind farms are proposed near Mudgee and Wellington.
