Roll back Ohio’s renewable energy mandate

21 February 2013 | cleveland.com

Friday’s Business article heralding the Lake Erie Energy Development Corp.’s financial boost from foreign countries to put wind turbines on Lake Erie should be a red flag to Ohio citizens. These people smell free money in the form of our tax dollars under the guise of creating jobs.

The lake is to be held in public trust for the citizens of Ohio. The state would be irresponsible to give leases to a company funded by foreign investment while crippling consumers and business owners with higher energy prices. This is contrary to two Ohio Chamber of Commerce policy priorities: affordable electricity and elimination of government mandates.

Conveniently left out of the article was the cost per kilowatt hour. The last time I checked, it was three times what we are paying for electricity today. I don’t want to pay for an intermittent, inefficient energy source with my tax dollars or in my electric bill.

I urge all Ohioans to write their state legislators and urge them to remove the renewable mandate for wind and solar from Ohio law. Let the free market dictate our energy, not government mandates.
