West Huntspill wind farm inquiry decision delayed until May

A public inquiry into controversial proposals to build four 400ft-tall wind turbines near Burnham-On-Sea will not be completed until May after unexpected delays to this week’s landscape discussions.

Energy firm Ecotricity is seeking to reverse Sedgemoor District Council’s decision to reject its proposals to build four wind turbines in West Huntspill, pictured above.

The appeal, which is underway at Burnham’s Princess Theatre this week, had been due to be completed in March however the landscape part of the inquiry has been postponed due to a sudden bereavement of a close relative of a landscape architect. That part of the inquiry will now take place on May 7th and 8th.

The Huntspill Wind Farm Action Group, which is fighting the wind farm, said they were pleased that more than 60 residents opposed to the scheme attended the first day of the planning inquiry yesterday (Tuesday).

“We were well represented on the first day of the appeal, when all the speakers spoke out against the scheme,” campaigner Julie Trott told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

She added that the group will be launching its blimp over the site of the proposed wind farm today (Wednesday) for a period of three days.

“In flying the blimp we can emphasise the towering height these industrial-sized wind turbines will be, dominating homes in close proximity and the local landscape for miles around due to the flat character of the Somerset Levels.”
