Boycott call over windfarms

I am chairwoman of Fyvie, Rothienorman and Monquitter Community Council in Aberdeenshire and we are consulted on numerous planning applications for wind turbines. At our meetings, we try to look at each application individually and fairly, using a checklist of factors, such as proximity to residential properties, cumulative effect and so on. Then we decide on our response to planners. This is not easy and can rightly generate much debate. We also welcome input from the developer and encourage public consultation.

You reported (the Press and Journal, February 18) that the opposition group Communities Against Wind Turbines in Aberdeenshire (Cawt) is calling on the public to boycott businesses which have supported a wind turbine application. This is unbelievable. This might be appropriate if businesses had supplied arms to Iraq or even horse meat to a supermarket, but surely not because they have supported a turbine application in Aberdeenshire. This new tactic by Cawt seems childish, to say the least, and irrelevant in the general debate. What good would trying to damage local businesses do?

Yes, we need to look at the bigger picture of renewable energy sources, but this is not the way to go about it. This is my personal opinion on the matter.
