Measuring infrasound from wind turbines

People living near the Waterloo wind farm in South Australia are worried about a noise they can’t hear.

The EPA has begun a survey to find out whether wind turbines emit infrasound – frequencies below the capacity of human hearing.

There are already environmental noise guidelines in place, and previous studies and a Senate enquiry last year found no health implications from infrasound. However many people living near windfarms are still not convinced.

Russell Marsh from the Clean Energy Council says infrasound also comes from traffic and air conditioners and would be more of a problem in urban areas.
