Deputy wants a ban on offshore reef wind farms

Wind-measuring equipment proposed for Jersey’s offshore reefs could be the thin end of the wedge that would lead to environmental vandalism, a long-serving States Member has claimed.

St Clement Deputy Gerard Baudains wants wind farms to be banned under the 2011 Island Plan and has lodged a proposal which, if adopted, would mean wind turbines would not be allowed to be built around the Island’s shores.

Plans to install temporary scientific equipment at sensitive offshore locations such as the Ecréhous and the Minquiers and off St Catherine’s Breakwater outraged environmental groups last year and a new proposal to site the masts further out to sea on outlying rocks has since been submitted.

It is hoped that a three-year project to record wind speed and direction at sea would form the basis of future discussions about using wind as a renewable source of energy in Jersey.
