Campaigners set to oppose turbine plans

The Scarborough News | 8 February 2013 | www.thescarboroughnews.co.uk

Campaigners are gearing up to battle plans to build a 255ft wind turbine at a pig farm on the outskirts of Scarborough.

Ryedale District Council Planning Committee is set to discuss proposals for the structure at Willerby Wold Pig Farm in Staxton on Tuesday.

The meeting takes place at 6pm at Ryedale House in Malton.

The plans have sparked a wave of objections from residents, heritage chiefs and parish councillors who claim the mast will “be a monumental eyesore”.

A spokesman for Scarborough Civic Society said: “The traditional view of the Mount that appears as one approaches Ganton and Staxton will be marred by this proposal.

“Similarly travellers by train will have their views of the approach to Scarborough and the wooded hillsides of the Carrs disfigured by this eyesore.”

Willerby Wold Parish Council has also strongly objected to the plans, stating: “A structure of this size would create a huge blot on the landscape in an area of natural beauty which residents wish to preserve. In addition being close to the holiday resorts of Filey and Scarborough, this structure will be clearly visible from these areas and as a result will deter visitors from coming to the area due to the monumental eyesore created.

“This will have a negative impact on the local economy on which many jobs are dependent.”

Scarborough Borough Council also expressed concerns over the “size and impact on both the railway and A64 road approach to Scarborough and Filey, and visual impact on the Wolds Way.

“There is a concern over the increasing cumulative impact experience by walkers using the Wolds Way.”
