Councils should be able to ‘delay’ wind farms

Scotland’s local councils should be handed the power to delay wind farms by a year as part of a shake-up of energy policy demanded by the Conservatives.

The party wants authorities to be able to impose a one year moratorium on any new wind farms to curb the number of turbines being built in Scotland.

Subsidies to wind farms should also be cut by fifty per cent to reduce household bills, the Conservatives said as the party unveiled a series of new policies on energy.

Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson has criticised the SNP government’s flagship policy of heavily promoting renewable energy rather than promoting other source of power such as nuclear,

She said: “This is a comprehensive review of Scotland’s energy needs, which does not focus narrowly on one particular part of the industry to meet demand.

“Crucial to keeping the lights on in years to come is an energy mix made up of renewables, nuclear and oil and gas.

“If we get this balance right then we can minimise the cost for consumers and the impact on our communities up and down the country.”
