Villagers battle turbine plans

Residents of a Gwendraeth Valley village say they are concerned about plans to build a wind turbine in their area.

This week a public meeting was held in Five Roads to discuss an application to build a single 50kw wind turbine and associated equipment on Tymawr Farm.

More than 80 people braved the snowy conditions to attend the meeting in Five Roads Village Hall to put their views across.

Carol Rees, a rural councillor for the Gwyn ward and Five Roads, said residents were given the opportunity to voice their objections at the meeting.

“The majority of people are very much against it. Five Roads is an historical village and the last thing we want is a big turbine in it.”

Ms Rees said there were a number of objections to plans and the turbine was going to be built near houses in the village.

“Most of the people living here will be able to see it and many of the objections are about the visual impact on the town.”

Ms Rees said other concerns which were raised at the meeting, included noise pollution, health issues, environmental implications and impacts on animal habitats. There are a number of issues with wildlife near the site.

Ms Rees said she has been told there were badgers living near the proposed site and that needs to be investigated.

“I’m with the majority of people and villagers and the majority are against it,” she added.

Residents have until the January 31 to make their views about this proposed development known.
