Sponsorship deal fuels anger

Scottish Daily Mail | 24 January 2013 |

Countryside campaigners have voiced outrage after Scottish and Southern Energy was named as sponsor for the Highlands and Islands Tourism awards.

SSE is behind such projects as creating Europe’s largest wind farm in South Lanarkshire, the controversial Beauly to Denny power line and plans to build more than 100 turbines at Loch Ness.

Some of its schemes have met huge opposition over their ‘devastating impact’ on rural areas.

Author Cameron McNeish called SSE’s sponsorship ‘a cynical PR exercise’ and added: ‘It seems they are obviously trying to align themselves with the tourist industry.’ Awards s pokesman Marina Huggett said: ‘SSE has a long track record of supporting Highland communities and we are fortunate to be the beneficiary of this funding.’
