Wind turbine opponents to see McGuinty out

Local opponents of the Green Energy Act will join a rally in Toronto on Saturday to coincide with the convention to replace Dalton McGuinty as head of the Ontario Liberal Party and premier of Ontario.

Wind energy opponents will meet Saturday morning at Allan Gardens in downtown Toronto to hear a handful of speakers before marching to join members of labour unions and others with grievances against the current government at a mass rally outside the former Maple Leaf Gardens, where the Liberal leadership convention is being held.

“We will protest the restriction of our democratic rights to have a say in having 500-foot wind turbine towers going in next to our homes and to demand that they acknowledge people are getting sick around these things,” said Lorrie Gillis, chair of the regional wind turbine working group.

The speakers to address the protesters include Barbara Ashbee, coordinator of a group called Victims of Wind (VOW), Mark Davis deputy-mayor of Arran-Elderslie and chair of the Multi-Municipal Wind Turbine Working Group, as well as Sherri Lange, CEO of North American Platform Against Wind Power (NA-PAW) along with author and academic Chuck Konkel.

A bus is leaving the Chatsworth community centre at 8 a.m. Saturday with stops in Markdale, Flesherton, Dundalk, Shelburne and Orangeville. Cost is $30 for the round trip. Gillis said the bus will leave promptly at 2 p.m. to head home after the mass rally.
