Approved: Turbines which threaten Yorkshire’s ‘most beautiful bay’

A Government inspector has approved controversial plans for nine massive turbines which opponents, including David Hockney, claimed would ruin “the most beautiful bay in Yorkshire.”

Developers TCI Renewables have been granted planning permission on appeal to build the turbines close to Fraisthorpe beach, near Bridlington, which will stand 62ft higher than the top of the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral.

The world-famous artist, entered a written representation to a public inquiry in December into the proposal, which said the turbines “would deface the landscape and the sea front of Bridlington Bay.”

Developers have made a bee-line for East Yorkshire’s wide open spaces and relatively cheap land, and several new wind farms are going up, including one at Sixpenny Farm near Howden. A nine-turbine scheme at Roos has just gone up.

The Inspector accepted that there would be “substantial harm” in the immediate vicinity of the appeal site, and would “slightly harm” some wider views, but said it would not dominate the wider landscape.
