No Derby wind vote

By Laura Carpenter | The Newport Daily Express | January 22, 2013 | www.newportvermontdailyexpress.com

DERBY – The Derby Select Board decided not to ask voters at Town Meeting about their opinion on wind turbines within the town. Instead, the board will wait and see what the legislature does and possibly mail out a survey to all taxpayers at a future date.
The legislature is considering a moratorium on further industrial wind development.
Monday, at the select board’s regular meeting, the conversation with the public remained somewhat mild, but accusations of impropriety among Derby officials emerged.
Residents Vicky Farrand-Lewis and Glenda Nye said that some of the actions by town leaders have the appearance of being improper.
At its last meeting, the planning commission voted on language to be put to the voters about wind turbines and to recommend that the select board approve a warning using that language. The planning commission cannot put anything on the ballot without the select board’s approval. The discussion came under other business and was not a warned agenda item.
