MP concerns about wind farm proposals

A Fylde coast MP says he has “serious worries” about new wind farm proposals in the Irish Sea and its impact on the Fleetwood’s fishing industry.

Eric Ollerenshaw, who represents the port in Parliament, made his comments after Morecambe MP David Morris put up an early day motion to protect ferry routes between the UK, Ireland and the Isle of Man.

The Isle of Man government has announced its support for the motion, but Mr Ollerenshaw says Mr Morris’ proposals do not go far enough.

He told The Gazette: “I want to take into account what remains of our fishing fleets.

“There are serious worries in terms of what happens to their boats in a storm or at night around there, and there needs to be a serious look at it.

“I don’t sign Early Day Motions but I support the whole principle of this because it’s not just ferries but also fisherman out there.”

Fylde MP Mark Menzies says he will also be looking into the issue.

He added: “It’s absolutely vital from a maritime safety perspective that shipping lanes are maintained.”
