Clean Line, government seek public input on transmission line plan

The Plains and Eastern Clean Line wind energy transmission project will be the focus of 12 public meetings scheduled over the next month by the U.S. Department of Energy.

The meetings will stretch across the proposed transmission line’s entire route from western Oklahoma to Tennessee.

Members of the public, planners for Clean Line Energy Partners and Energy Department officials will discuss the scope of the environmental impact statement needed to approve the 700-plus mile project.

The first meeting will be Tuesday at Arkansas State University in the town of Marked Tree. The last gathering will be Feb. 21 in Searcy, Ark.

All of the events will be open houses scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Formal presentations are set from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The Oklahoma meetings are as follows:

Jan. 29, Beaver County Fairgrounds Pavillon in Beaver; Jan. 31, Woodward Convention Center in Woodward; Feb. 4, Civic Center Room D in Muskogee; Feb. 5, Youth and Community Center in Cushing; and Feb. 7, Convention Hall in Enid.

The Plains and Eastern Clean Line Project, once approved, will be a 500-kilovolt, direct-current system bringing power from western Oklahoma wind farms to the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Houston-based Clean Line says the transmission line, which could cost $2 billion, may see construction by late 2015 or early 2016, with completion within two years.
