Kingston: No wind turbine shutdown, third way sought

Opponents of Kingston’s four wind turbines packed the main meeting room of the Town House Monday night. The public hearing posting contained the words “possible enforcement action”. They again called for the board to shut the turbines down. Town Counsel Jay Talerman again advised that the board wait until it had scientific evidence on its side. He said, otherwise, the turbine operators would easily obtain a court order turning the turbines back on the next day.

Board member Dan Sapir offered the motion the crowd wanted to hear. He called for the shut-down of all the turbines until testing is complete and the turbines “…may resume safe operation.”

Board member Jack Breen offered the motion a majority of the board wanted to hear. He called for a guarantee the board would not take enforcement action regarding the turbines until it had received “objective information” about their performance. Only Sapir voted against Breen’s motion.

The crowd called out “shame on you.”

Chairman Joe Casna said he hoped the parties could begin talking about mitigation measures before the study results come in. Attorneys for both turbine operators agreed they would rather mitigate than litigate.
