Watershed sessions open

Fort William First Nation is urging hunters, trappers and elders to attend a series of meetings this week regarding the proposed Big Thunder Wind Park project.
The meetings, which start today, are dubbed watershed focus groups.
The proposed 32-megawatt wind park by Horizon Wind Inc. is to consist of 16 turbines on the Nor’Westers just west of Thunder Bay on a chunk of city-owned land in Neebing Township.
The company has been trying to develop the project since 2007, but has yet to receive provincial approval.
An earlier proposal was denied by the province on the basis that it would jeopardize peregrine falcons in the area. The company has since offered its own bird expert saying the project won’t negatively impact falcons.
In November, the company announced a reduced version of its original proposal, which had been opposed by various citizen and business groups.
The FWFN focus group schedule is as follows:
• Today: Elders & youth, 6-8 p.m.
• Tuesday: Seasonal harvesters, 6-8 p.m.
• Wednesday: Seasonal hunters, 6-8 p.m.
All meetings are to take place at the Fort William First Nation Youth Centre.
